Kitty In The Box
We've just bought a new washing machine and Scoop and Au are delighted.

Here's Au putting in a cautious first paw...

A cautious second paw...

And it's a kitty in the box!
Scoop was already inside, but being a veteran soldier cat, he kept himself well hidden.Labels: cat, cat blog, cat box

Cat On Guard
When Au moved in with us some 7 years ago, he was a very shy kitty. While he’s still shy of strangers, he is completely relaxed in the company of his own family. In fact, he’s so darn relaxed and lazy that he lolls about on the sofa like a royal potentate.
There was a bit on Animal Planet recently that warned domestic cats share the wild cat's instinct for self-preservation. Never, the seriously hushed announcer said dramatically, does the domestic cat truly relax his guard.
Right. And this is the sight of a cat on guard. I don't think so!Labels: cat, cat blog, weekend cat blogging

Tiger Striped Kitty
We used to have just black girl strays in the back lane, but since orange and white Yow Yow (formerly known as The Cat With The Dirty Face) moved in, a little colour has been added to the mix!
Here is our youngest cat at the back. Isn’t she pretty with her tiger stripes?
And here’s her mum, sitting pretty while having her picture taken.Labels: cat, cat blog, weekend cat blogging

The Lip Salute
I was very surprised to see a new logomania column out - so soon after the Piggy one, but The lip salute that covers kissing terms came out on Friday - and I missed it! Luckily it's online too...
Cat kisses weren't covered in the column (different audience) which is a shame because they're quite fascinating. Au sometimes comes over and literally kisses me, rubbing his face against me and giving me a small lick. But most of the time Scoop and Au sit quietly purring and squeezing their eyes at us in classic kitty kisses.
Any other cat kiss strategies out there?Labels: cat, kiss, weekend cat blogging

Why There Is No Year Of The Cat
Legend has it that when the Lord Buddha decided to name the years, he summoned all the animals in the land, and told them anyone wanting to have the honour of having a year named after them would have to take part in a race. As Lord Buddha decided on a cycle of 12 years, he announced only the first 12 to cross the line would be chosen.
The cat and the rat who were best friends both decided they wanted a month named after themselves. Discussing the race that evening, the cat reminded the rat he was a heavy sleeper. The cat therefore asked his friend the rat to waken him in the morning in good time for the race. The rat agreed but then had secret second thoughts.
The rat realised that his chances of being among the first twelve animals to cross the finish line would be better if the cat didn’t take part. So the next morning the rat crept away without waking his friend.
The rat being exceptionally clever realised his chances would be even better if he could hitch a ride from one of the faster competitors. Looking around, rat decided to approach the ox whom he knew well.
The kindly ox allowed the rat to sit on his shoulders during the race. When the race started, the ox ran as fast as he could, with the little rat cheering him on all the way. Then, a little before the end of the race, the rat jumped off the tired ox’s back and ran quickly across the finish line. As the rat was first, his year is the first in the cycle, and the ox is second.
The cat slept throughout the morning, missing the race entirely. He only woke up when the other animals came back, celebrating the rat’s win and announcing the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar had also made it into the first twelve.
Looking at the triumphant rat, the cat lost his temper. He jumped up as fast a lightning and ran at the rat who squeaked in terror and ran off as fast as he could. From this day on the cat and the rat were fierce enemies – and the cat never managed to get into the zodiac.

Tarot Card Kitty
Au is in the Star today looking extremely handsome. Unfortunately I spoke too quickly. Yow-Yow is back at the front of the house AND eating his biscuits around the back too. I'm pondering ways to keep him at the back because the home invasions he stages upset Scoop and Au. If anyone has any ideas, please share!
As for the tarot card reading... I've read Au's horoscope a few times, and Scoop has sat for his as well but so far the readings are rather vague. We're enjoying it however and will keep at it.
Wishing you an auspicious and properous Year of the Boar.

Cats don't know the meaning of Valentine's Day
Remember I was pleased when The Cat Formerly Known For His Dirty Face finally settled in at the back door?
Everything seemed to be going well, and we even renamed him a third time last week, calling him Yow Yow as this is what he says when he calls round for snacks.
But the little so-and-so emerged from the back lane last night, marched round the front, broke into the house, and caused havoc.
Scoop was furious, Au was shattered, and my sleep went completely out of the window when the bloodcurdling screams rang out at 2AM.
It's obvious cats don't know the meaning of Valentine's Day. I shall go and take a bit of chicken outside, and while the fuzzies are enjoying a snack, I'll grab the opportunity to give them a lecture on the concept of love. And the joys of silent nights.
PS For those of you who are new to the blog and don't know Yow Yow, here he is.
PPS Happy Valentine's Day!Labels: cat, cat blog

Monsoon Drain Kitty
One of the stray girls in the back lane has decided our back door is the best place to keep her kittens. We’ve given her a Tiger Beer box, extra rations, and have half closed the outer screen door so that the new brood don’t get wet when it rains.
This black girl is a sensible sort. She’s decided that we’re good people, and always allows us to pat her. I've picked her up a few times and helped her with some small problems (like a sore patch on her paw, or the occasional split claw) and she has never scratched me.
Now she's a Mum, we’re allowed to change the Tiger Beer box every second day, and admire her kittens briefly. Sweet as the black girl is, she is a Monsoon Drain Kitty at heart, so we don't dare admire too much in case she gets worried and moves her babies.
If they survive, we’ll be looking for homes in 6 weeks time!Labels: cat, kitten, weekend cat blogging

The Cat Formerly Known For His Dirty Face
The Cat With The Dirty Face is back but this time his face is clean. As such, he’s now been re-christened The Cat Formerly Known For His Dirty Face.
We’ve seen him pop in and out of a house down the street, but this kitty doesn’t seem to have much of a home life. He’s constantly starving and breaks into our house in the middle of the night to raid the cat biscuit bowl.
After much persuasion and enticement, The Cat Formerly Known For His Dirty Face was moved to the back lane where he can chat the stray girls who live there, and eat biscuits at our back door twice a day.
He’s been coming round off and on for some weeks, but it’s taken him ages to realize that feeding times are 830AM and 430PM. For the last week now he’s turned up on time, and eaten his fill, so we hope he’ll stick to the routine. Comparing how he was a few months ago to today, it’s clear he’s already looking a lot better!Labels: cat

The Fuzzy Terminator
Au is in the Weekend section of the Star today (print version only) showing off a captured mouse. Our fuzzy terminator is currently lolling around on the sofa, cleaning his claws, and making plans for the day.
His colleague Scoop has decided one of my plant pots is the best place to snooze the morning away. As my marjoram seedlings died weeks ago, I don’t really mind – except that Scoop’s feet, tummy and chin are covered in bits of soil which he cheerfully dumps on the living room floor when he comes in! But that’s cats for you…
Have a good weekend everyone.
