Mollycoddle Overkill?

Target was out for a walk last night. He was sniffing around our neighbour's car, trying to figure out where she'd been (the wet market so the smells were really interesting) The sun set rather abruptly and suddenly our kitten was out in the dark.

Of course this is the time everyone is out and about: strollers, kids with footballs, etc. But Au went out and brought Target back across the street safely.

We were all grateful to the big cat but I'm wondering if we aren't mollycoddling the kitten a bit too much. After all, we live in a quiet dead end street and Target was only 5 to 10 meters away from our garden.

Hmmmm.....

BTW Dog Talk is out in the print version of the Star tomorrow. If you have a good dog story, please feel free to share on this blog!

COT Superfecund Girl

A stray girl in the back has just given birth to several kittens. We're not sure how many she had in total, but two died yesterday and there are five little ones left. We've given them a Tiger beer box to shelter in so hopefully some will make it.

What's interesting is that we can see quite easily that the fathers of these kittens are different. (BTW, for new cat-lovers: cats are superfecund, meaning that the girls who mate with lots of boys give birth to litters of kittens where kittens may different fathers. Weird, huh?)

The little ginger one is obviously one of Yow-Yow's but the grey ones must be offspring from another stray tom in our area, a funny grey and pale cream cat with pale purple eyes.

One bit of news: our Target won't be adding to the kitten problem. He went to the vet last week and had the snip. He's 100% recovered and is in an excellent mood!

New Arrival

kittenWe've a new inmate in the house. A small marmalade and cream boy cat, a rescued stray who has been fostered by a very kind Malay lady in our neighbourhood.

We weren't ready for another cat but Au has been fretting since Scoop passed away. As much as we try, human people just don't have the necessary skills cat people have when it comes to patrolling and playing race and chase.

Au has been angelic. The first night he saw the kitten, he sat and watched with big eyes. When we put the kitten to bed, Au came to sit with us, sniffing us over intently.

The first morning, we let the kitten explore my office and Scoop's room. He's a brave little thing and he was careering all over the place, playing with a pingpong ball by lunchtime.

He sniffed over a sleeping Au in the afternoon, but when Au woke up and touched whiskers with him in a friendly way, the kitten puffed up like a blowfish and hissed. Surprised and hurt, Au walked off. That little scene was repeated later in the day.

Au playingOn the morning of the third day, yesterday, Au looked at the kitten, turned his back and stalked off. He stopped at the door, turned around and gave a theatrical hiss.

Surprisingly this did the trick. The kitten followed him about yesterday afternoon, sniffing excitedly at all the place Au touched. And Au has been looking at this little scrap of fur with a small smile. They touched whiskers last night (without hissing!) so I'm hoping they'll be firm friends soon.

Will keep you posted...

Monsoon Drain Kitty

kittens in a beer box
One of the stray girls in the back lane has decided our back door is the best place to keep her kittens. We’ve given her a Tiger Beer box, extra rations, and have half closed the outer screen door so that the new brood don’t get wet when it rains.

This black girl is a sensible sort. She’s decided that we’re good people, and always allows us to pat her. I've picked her up a few times and helped her with some small problems (like a sore patch on her paw, or the occasional split claw) and she has never scratched me.

Now she's a Mum, we’re allowed to change the Tiger Beer box every second day, and admire her kittens briefly. Sweet as the black girl is, she is a Monsoon Drain Kitty at heart, so we don't dare admire too much in case she gets worried and moves her babies.

If they survive, we’ll be looking for homes in 6 weeks time!
