COT Cat Wrestling!

It's boiling hot in Malaysia - some 38C and sticky to boot. Nasty. The cats spend most of their time floating upside down underneath the fans, but at night they're wrestling.

Pity we missed the cat-o-lympics!

COT: Naughty Cat Club Kitties

Au and Target have been wild all day. They're jumping up and down on the table, the sofa and the bed. They're squealing their way up and down the stairs. They are wrestling on their rug, and on the sofa. They are WILD!

The laundry that was on the bed is now scattered on the floor. The papers that were on my desk are also on the floor. Oh, and the rug that was in the hall is now in my office.

Au and Target are living up to their reputation as members of the Naughty Kitty Club!

COT Bed Pig

This picture was taken yesterday at 11AM.

Target got up at 6 for breakfast, was back in bed by 620 and then rolled about in luxurious comfort until 1115 - at which point he got up, stretched and demanded lunch!

I was forced to get up at 745 and work but Target took the Kuala Lumpur Thaipusam holiday. I want to be a cat! They get to take all the holidays...

Also wishing all Hindus a blessed Thaipusam.

COT Snizzling All Sunday

I hung out with Target all day Sunday. We slept in till 9AM, cuddled for half an hour (spreading fur ALL over the bed in the process), had breakfast together, and then fuzzed about on the sofa watching episodes of Buffy. It was sybaritic. It was lovely.

Target purred so much he sounded rusty. He shed so much fur over me during our snizzle sessions that I looked furry. Au was disgusted by all the baby talk that went along with it. He stayed by Tom and played rough games.

To each his own!

COT Naughty Cats!

Au and Target are proud members of the Naughty Kitty Club. They may seem like purrfectly sweet fluffs, but they do have their evil moments.

Au's #1 Naughty No No is to wake us up at 6AM to say he's hungry - even if one of us fed him at 545AM! Au just wants us to get up.

I'm immune but the other slave gets up, goes downstairs, and ends up starting his working before 7AM. Au of course is back in bed by this time.

Target's #1 Naughty No No is sticking his claws into the sofa. He doesn't claw the sofa because that would be too evil.

Instead, he lies on his back, snoozing. When he hears his name though, he wakens up, and begins to purr loudly. At the same time he paddles his paws, sticking out his claws. And of course, some of these end up in the cushions.

If you have a naughty kitty, check out Amy's Naughty Kitty Club, and drop us a note with the blog post!

If you are in Malaysia, don't forget that there is still time to put in your entry for the Weekender Star Katz Tales competition. Check this post for entry guidelines. Remember, participants must live in Malaysia.

Katz Tales Competition

Scoop, our old kitty who lived with us for some 12 years, passed away 2 years ago - after a fun filled luxury life that many cats would envy!

Scoop lived in Kuching in Sarawak as well as Malacca and Kajang and Subang Jaya in West Malaysia. He traveled on on aeroplane - and had the man at the airport weigh him twice because he couldn't believe how fat Scoop was! And Scoop made friends wherever he went.

Here he is, snoozing in front of the bedroom window on his favourite box and towel.

A year or so after he passed away, Sook Yeng who was one of the organisers of the Dogathon, sent me a gift for a pet rock made by Suzi Chua, a popular Pet Artist in Malaysia. And here he is! Isn't he glorious?

Suzi is one of the most talented people I know. She really captures pet characters, be it on rock or canvas. So I'm really chuffed to tell you that the 3 lucky people in Malaysia who win first prize at The Star Weekender newspaper this month will be getting one of their pets painted on a pet rock by Suzi.

Winners will also get free copies of Tales, the book, and yummy scrummy pet treats from Addiction. Au's fave are the salmon crunchies. In fact, they are the only shop bought treats he's really fond of. Target also likes the herring and fish crunchies.

Finally, the publishers are throwing in a nice extra in the shape of a discount!

All you have to do is enter the Weekender Star Katz Tales competition. I'm afraid it's for people in Malaysia only. If Tales is ever out in Europe and North America, I'll hold another contest.

As published in Feline Fixation this week in The Star, these are the entry guidelines:

Katz Tales Weekender Star Contest

Katz Tales: Under The Velvet Paw is authored by Weekender’s Ellen Whyte and is based on her column Katz Tales in The Star.

Katz Tales: Living Under The Velvet Paw is available in all major bookshops. The retail price is RM28. If you answer these three questions correctly, you may be one of the lucky winners to win a free copy of Katz Tales: Living Under The Velvet Paw and other fabulous prizes!

All you have to do is answer these questions:
1. Who is older: Target or Au?
2. Who was called Mr Snizzles as a kitten: Target or Au?
3. Who has a white tummy: Target or Au?

Also, Complete the slogan in less than 20 words:

I like Katz Tales because . . . . .

Please include your full name, address, telephone number and email address.

Entries may be emailed to katztales@lepak.com or posted to Katz Tales c/o Marshall Cavendish (M) Sdn Bhd, Bangunan Times Publishing, Lot 46, Subang Hi-Tech Industrial Park, Batu Tiga, 40000 Shah Alam, Selangor.

Participants must live in Malaysia.

There are 3 first prizes:

COT Feline Christmas Feast

Instead of turkey we opted for Christmas beef this year. It was a winner!

Target and Au start their Christmas lunch at racing speed.

Au pauses to appreciate the Christmas beef; a fatal error.

Target finishes first and spots Au still has some food left.

Target has elbowed Au out of the way and is eating the last bit.

Double-checking to make sure all the food is gone.

Food coma!

Pick Up Sticks Kitty

We're making Pick Up Sticks games for Christmas by dying sate sticks blue, orange, red and green.

I think I've dyed a thousand of the things, so hopefully we'll get a lot of sets out of it. Then we will give them to our young friends in orphanages and homes as a stocking-filler.

We roadtested the sticks for colour fastness yesterday, and Target got in on the game. We think he could be a champion player!

You may notice I'm messing about with the blog a bit, as is Jett, my neighbour and web designer. It should look better next week.

Katz Tales is out in the print version of The Star, Weekender tomorrow. It's all about Target, his accident, and how Au is making capital out of the situation.

And now, it's Repost Friday - cos I'm too busy to write something new! This one appeared on 20th May 2006. Hope that you all haven't seen it before...

How The Tabby Got It's "M"

There are lots of cat legends, but while talking in the pub the other night (Kusar Cabana in SS15!) I heard one that's new to me the other day on how the tabby cat got it's "M", the typically have dark markings on their foreheads.

Christian legends say the Virgin Mary marked the tabby with an M for Maria as thanks for warming the baby Jesus in the cold stable at Bethlehem, while Muslim legends say the Prophet Mohammed bestowed the mark as thanks for a timely warning from his pet cat Muezza that a poisonous snake had crawled into his coat sleeve.
Photo taken by Bernard Landgraf; courtesy of WikiCommons http://commons.wikimedia.org
Many of the jungle cats, such as tigers, cheetahs, and ocelots also have the M marking. Wonder who was brave enough to pet those big kitties!

This tiger was snapped by Bernard Landgraf; the Ocelot was taken by someone working for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Both pictures are in the public domain. Source: WikiCommons

Biting the hand that feeds, and cuddles, and pets...

Great news! Target is feeling a lot better.

After dislocating his front right paw a month ago, Target has been getting better slowly. Three days ago he put his paws around Au's neck and challenged the senior kitty to wrestle. Au is a nice fluff so he was very gentle.

And Target is also playing "bite the hand that tickles your tummy." We worry about his sore paws so we hold our hands still and let him choose how hard to push. He's not pushing very hard but gosh he has sharp little teeth!

I'm also very excited because I've been invited for an interview at BFM89.9 the Business Station radio channel in Malaysia on Monday at 2PM local time. I will be writing a new story especially for the radio programme, so tune in. 2PM in Malaysia is 7AM in Spain and Belgium, 6AM in the UK, 1AM in Michigan USA, and 10PM California USA. Hear it online live here!

See you then!

Target Is Cold

Thanks to the monsoon it's been about 20C or 70F here the last few days. Au has fluffed up his coat and is keeping warm with lots of games. Plus, he's got layers of fat like a polar bear.

But our tropical Target is cold. We've given him a fluffy towel to cuddle inside, and he sleeps under the sheets with us at night.

More on Friday! For other cats, visit Gattina or the links in the margin. And buy my book Katz Tales, OK?

Target Is A Fur Brain

Target is walking about like an old lady. Having his dislocated bones put back in place, every muscle and tendon in his paw and shoulder are sore. Also, as he must have used tremendous force to pull his paw out of whatever trap it was in, he also damaged the muscles on his haunches and back paws. Plus, he scraped all the skin off his undamaged front paw. In other words, our little fuzz is in total recovery mode.

Until that is, a very soft spoken friendly man rattled our gate to announce he was here (our doorbell doesn't work) thereby sending Target out of bed, out of the window, down to the wall, down to the ground and into the storm drain system.

We were so worried he'd hurt his paw again, we hustled our guests out of the house. (Sorry about that Joleen and Ang!) Target appeared 1 minute after their cars vanished down the road.

I love Target but sometimes he is such a fur brain that I want to strangle him! And how come he's so good and calm and brave in the vet and a scaredy cat maniac at home???

Here he is, resting his sore bones on two pillows placed on his rug by Tom, the other servant.

There is no Katz Tales or Dog Talk out this weekend but Sharon from Bibliobuli will guest blog about her cat Nisbo on Friday. It's a good story so see you then.

In the meantime, do please take look at my new books Katz Tales: Living Under The Velvet Paw and Logomania: Where Common Phrases Come From And How To Use Them.

Plus, I've changed my Twitter address and am now tweeting only about cats at KatzTalesTweets. Follow me and let me know where you are so I can follow you?

Target Recovering In Bed Like King

Target is sore all over. So sore he can hardly move. So he's propped up in bed on a stack of pillows, and we bring him water, cat food and biscuits in bed. No wonder he's purring!

Katz Tales is out in The Star Weekender section, print version only. It's all about whiskers and cat intelligence. Have a great weekend!

Target Getting Better

Thank you for the purrs and the prayers. I was touched that friends said prayers in church, the mosque, Buddhist and Hindu temples, and also thought for us, and otherwise petitioned the universe on Target's behalf. IT WORKED! Target is whole and fine again.

As it turned out, Target had a dislocated paw. The elbow bone had come out of its socket completely. Our vet was away, so we visited another vet - one who has an xray machine.

Dr Vijay of Healing Rooms was great. He was kind to Target, diagnosed the problem, and told us it was so bad, we'd need a specialist.

The local specialist was abroad, so we traveled 300 km to Kuantan to visit Dr Puah at the East Coast Medical Centre. He examined Target, knocked him out and managed to fix it without an operation.

Target was an angel throughout the whole thing. His paw is a the proper angle although a little swollen. He's now recovering in bed.

Thing is, Target has to be an indoor cat for the next 6 weeks. He is not allowed to jump up and bash himself about. So this means Au is housebound too. This is how Au looked when we told him the bad news.

More about sore paws and travels with Target on Friday. In the meantime, here are the guys that Target owes his paw too....

Target is Hurt

This was going to be all about our book Katz Tales but we've had a disaster.

Target was out all day on Sunday. I called for him at lunch, at teatime and then, really worried, went out at night and walked the streets, looking for him. Tam, Snow and the other cats came with me, also worried that I was worried.

Target heard me and came home limping. When Tom picked him up in his arms, Target heaved a sigh of relief. His front paw was horribly twisted. We feared a break but it wasn't swollen. Also, he didn't mind us touching it.

There are now 24 vets anywhere near us. But thanks to Cathy, we got a phone call through to a vet. He thinks Target fell and hurt his shoulder, damaging his nerves. A visit to the clinic this morning showed he has a dislocated paw that needs surgery. Vet who can do the job lives 280km away so planning trip in the morning.

Target is asleep under the bed now. He is not in pain thank goodness but we're all nervous wrecks.

Purr for us?

PS I don't want to bother him with the flashy thing so this pic was taken Friday, before the accident.

COT Whisker counting

I tried to count Target's whiskers the other day but he's too ticklish. Every time I get through counting the big ones, he starts to wriggle, purr and chew my fingers. So I got clever and took his picture.

I see 15 whiskers here. That's 3 more than the average. Hmm, does that mean he's smarter than the average cat or just fuzzier?

Please note there will be no Star Weekender printed this weekend because of Deepavali (Hindu festival of lights holiday). So there will be no Dog Talk! To make up for it, I'll write a Katz Tales and Dog Talk cross-over story, and post it on this blog this Friday.

FYI Katz Tales the book is still sitting in the warehouse. The distributors are getting ready and HOPEFULLY the book will be out in the shops soon. I'll let you know when it happens.

Loving Purr-Fluff

Some people say that cats only like people because of the food we give them. Maybe there are such cats about but Target is not one of them.

When I was making tea this morning, Target rubbed up against my ankle and said, "Meep," meaning, "I'm hungry". While I prepared a bowl of chopped chicken liver, he rubbed and purred and purred and rubbed.

When I put the bowl on the ground, he ignored it. Instead of going to his breakfast, he rolled over on my feet, purred and demanded a cuddle.

We cuddled and fuzzed and purred for ten minutes. Then I had to tell him I had to go upstairs to the office. When I put him down, Target got set to come with me. I had to remind him to eat his breakfast.

Target was starving. He bolted down his food and then came rushing upstairs into the office. He's now sitting pretty, purring at me and squeezing his eyes to send me cat kisses.

Opportunistic cats? Not that I know of!

COT Food From Heaven

I dropped a bag of cat biscuits the other day in the kitchen. Au was disgusted and stalked off. He likes his kitty crunchies in a bowl.

But Target thought that throwing biscuits all over the flood was a brilliant idea. Tail up, he hoovered up a vast amount in just a few minutes. And he was actually disappointed when I helped gather up the rest!

We're back from our break and ready to go but we've got tonnes of email! So this is a short one and we'll be back on Friday with a Formerly Feral post. We'll visit you all in the next day or so.

COT Rug Attack!

Target is wild today! He crept up on Au who was snoozing in his upstairs box and pounced on him. Then he came into the office and pounced on me. Now he's sneaking around in Tom's office, pouncing on the rug there. Target is having a blast!

I've got a case of screaming deadlines so will blog properly on Formerly Feral Friday.

COT Cat Stand-Off

For the last two days Au and Target have been out all night and asleep for most of the day. But when it's twilight, our two fuzzies battle each other to see who is king cat.

Good times!

Happy Cats on Tuesday. We're posting a long post on Friday with a feral cats theme to honour kitties like Au and Target who are rescued strays. Join us?

Snoozle-Bug Fluffs

The monsoon started last week. It's been raining every day which is great as all the fires the farmers set to burn down the forests in Indonesia and Malaysia have been doused. We saw the morning sun for the first time last week in ages!

The cats are quite enjoying the rain.

Au takes it in turn to snooze in his downstairs and upstairs boxes. His outside box got drenched and has to be replaced. His majesty's ears were set back with displeasure when he realised this morning I haven't been able to set up a new one yet so I'd better hop to it tomorrow.

Target decided he wants to be a bed pig. He spent all of yesterday in bed and has been in bed since 6AM today. When I walk in, he wakens, shows me his tummy, and yawns luxuriously. I call him my little snoozle bug fluff while I pet him, both of which he adores. It's just as well nobody can see or hear us; it could kill a diabetic.

One good thing though is that as Target has no intention of getting up, I have no intention of making the bed. Now we're both winners!

Katz Tales is out in the print version of The Star tomorrow. Check it out and read all about Tam's visit to the vet, and a new cat I meet called Za who is up for adoption.

Za (pictured left) is cute, lively, very friendly and looking for a good home. She's staying with Naemah who was Target's foster mum. If you are in Malaysia and want to adopt her, buy tomorrow's newspaper for details.

Ee Lynn is also looking for a home for three adorable kittens nicknamed the Mouseketeers. Check them out at her blog.

If you're looking for dogs, check out these pages: one and two.
